Rob Heffernan is not the only champion walker. Dan O’Leary had that honour many years previously and probably earned a lot more relatively.
A very interesting life and story has been learnt of through the web.

I enjoyed this so much. My Father used to display the many posters and cigarette adds of his Grandpa Dan in our basment. I always wanted to know more about Great Grandpa Dan's life in Ohio before coming to chicago but never found much. My cousins Marshall and his late brither Dan looked exactly like walking Dan's photos. My daughter is a cross country runner. I heard walking Dan's wife, my great Grabdma Zillah Ruth Millard O'Leary died when he went to California. He sent my grandpa a letter from California. Please tell me anything you know of his family life before Chicago

Our records show Daniel O'Learys son was Daniel F. O'Leary and grandson Lester O'Leary. Daniel out lived his son Daniel F and were both buried in Los Angeles County. Lester was my grandfather.
