Headstones That Reference America, and elsewhere

‘That's a great one John. It would be interesting to pull together some of the Irish headstones thar make reference to America or family there, they are great way of visualising the diaspora.’

Damian Shiels, Twitter, Jul 14, 2021

I did respond to the Twitter conversation with some headstones that I met shortly afterwards. In May 2024, when writing a blog that was inspired by a headstone erected by Bridget LeRewe from U.S.A., a decision was made to create one page of American Headstones – possibly erected by someone in America; mentioning some family members who left; possibly people who returned.

As with all collections, it will be incomplete – visiting all cemeteries is not an option; new headstones continue to be erected; some headstones had eroded beyond legibility. To me, it should be interesting to note any similarities – a reason enough for this page.

References to other countries are also included below.

Note: The initial names in the listings are those of the people overseas. The headstone may refer to a different family name.
