Having walked up and down MacCurtain Street for many years, it was surprising that it was only last week that I registered the fanlight sign.

It brought back memories of the Thompson bread man calling in his van with bread orders and for sale – my recollection is that a Vienna loaf was a treat.

The cake treat was ‘Milly Filly’ which grew up to be Mille Feuille but my suspicion is that this came from Roches Stores tea shop rather than Thompsons.

I have a tin of Thompsons Fruit Cake flavored with Irish Whiskey 28ozs (1 3/4 Lbs) (794gr)
Have had it since Dec 1974 unopened of course)
Has a picture of Blarney Castle on the tin.
My question is Thompsons still in business or has it been sold or has it just changed its name.
Plan to open it when it turns 50 years old.just 10 years away.
Any information would be appreciated on Thompsons .

Hello Gary. I would love to have a picture of the tin. Supposedly my father and grandfather said we were related to the Thompson's who owned the bakery in Cork, Ireland. I do not know if this is true or not? My great, great grandfather William Thompson came to Quebec, Canada between 1829 - 1832. One day I hope to see this building in person.

Hi,

Members of the origional Thompson family still live in Cork.

The business was set up by A family Matriach who could trace a link to the Hugenot influx after a purge of same in the sixteen hundreds in Paris

There was also a direct relative in Canada who held a senior position or received an award in Canada at the turn of the last century.

I think that there may also be a Thompson family connection to the great Cork social reformer, thinker and writer of the 1700s plus ...who led the way and had the respect of Mark and Engels

Hi,

I worked in Thompsons for several years.
Thompsons had 2 distinct cakes in there tinned range, as I remember.

Whiskey
Dundee

These cakes were primarily for export.
Usa, Canada were major markets but the products were sold and distributed world wide.
Letters were received from satisfied international customers on a regular basis.
My biggest regret is not having kept a cake.
The cake shoud be, based on feedback, edible. But just be sure.

My late father Timothy O Herlihy worked in Thompsons from 1944 to 1980 . I remember the Christmas cakes he brought home: the infamous madeira and Dundee! Their made to order Birthday cakes were just out of this world.

Sorry for late reply.

I did work with Tadhg O' Herlihy who lived off the Togher Road in Cork.

I interacted with Tadgh daily at one point during my time in Thompsons.
He was a a superb individual.

Hi,

I worked in Thompsons in the 70s and 80s until 84.
It started in 1826.
It closed on the late 80s
I actually bought the tins, from Metal Box UK, and the bonded whisked from Woodford and Bourne in Cork that were used in Tinned Whiskey... and I think...tinned Blarney. We also had a tinned Dundee cake

Based on letters that I received from owners of thoses tinned cakes in South East Asia and who had opened tins from the 1930s ... you will enjoy your cake on the 50th anniversary.

I would love to see a picture of the tin
I did a blog today about a plaque on the building to commemorate 150 years in business in 1976.
Thompsons are no longer trading - seemingly ceased business in 1984.

I often get to read the Evening Echo, Thursday's in particular, when I am in Cork.

Their Thursday articles on historic Cork seem to have constant references to 'Thompsons'.

Memories ... but rembering in particular is the key to life.
