Once again, Galway proves the benefit of public display of poetry – this time at University Hospital Galway.
Maybe I am one of a small number but I do very much welcome the chill-out time and reflection that these poems prompt. Maybe it is another reminder of all the stones that I have picked up that are tugging at me for a trip to Galicia. Maybe it is just the season of review and plans. Thank you Don Paterson. This Volunteer station is in the entrance foyer at Galway University Hospital.
A number of thoughts came to mind: Why are there two chairs for one volunteer? The location of the sign could not be in very many more prominent locations – as one enters the main hospital block. I hope that the hospital is more concerned with their medical treatment than their spelling, but should they not be accurate in both? More than once before have I posted regarding public displays of poetry in Galway – I have yet to find anywhere in the country as enthusiastic for public reflection.
Paint and glaze a tile. Then stick to a wall. Not very expensive. The return from feelgood factor so outweighs the investment. Or maybe it is just me.
![]() This plaque did intrigue. It succeeded in stopping this passer-by to pause and think of Johnny Massacre, someone I had not heard of prior to seeing the plaque. Standing there in Galway, I did wonder as to the use of the title ‘Professional Lunatic’. Having watched the two clips, it is both appropriate and honourable.

I did wonder at the time as to the concept of smooth waves. If I had only read it properly... It did prompt me to buy the book and only when reading the paragraph in the book did I spot the error of my ways - now corrected
