A while ago, I asked what the Irish translation of ‘Avenue’ might be. Since then, I have been keeping an eye out for streetsigns for a number of avenues. Thanks to Cork City Council, I am left with more questions than answers: Is ‘Beallach’ an Irish alternative to ‘Ascaill’ and ‘Aibhinne’ for translating the word ‘Avenue’? Is it ‘Bealach’ or ‘Beallach’? Is it ‘Winthrop Lane’ or ‘Winthrop Avenue’? Does ‘Dalton’ translate as ‘Dalatúnaigh’ or ‘Dalton’? Is the avenue for one Dalton or more than one? Or does it matter where apostrophe is placed? Does Winthrop translate as ‘Winthrop’ or ‘Buinthrop’? Or are these just further examples of ‘Pure Cork’? | “We would drive up the Avenue, but we haven't got the price |
