No garage or run-down shack is good enough. No.
Only the inner sanctum of Ballaghaderreen Golf Club will suffice for chosen residence – and without the necessity to cough up green fees.
Many thanks to SOK for the photo which set me down on two separate memory tracks.
In college days, PM’s visits home on the bus to Mayo was through Ballaghderreen. This was the only time I would have heard or spoken the word Ballaghderreen ( Balla- Ha-Dreen)
Years later, my local publican said he used to live in Balla-Ha-Der- Een – and explained thatas a border town there was a Mayo and Roscommon pronunciation.
Similarly, Ballyvaughan – which I always understood to be Bally-Vaawn. That was until the people of Clare corrected me to Bally-Vaw-Han
Hey, Boy, See the Birds
Them aren’t birds
They are birds
Oh, by jay, you’re right, they are birds.
With thanks to JG
