‘The Old Rustic Bridge by the Mill’ is a tune that is familiar for reasons unknown – probably as a result of hearing at many various times. There definitely was no conscious effort to try to learn the words.

Upto last week, it was just a tune.

Following my walkabout in Castletownroche, it is now also a particular bridge and a particular mill.

That Tuesday, I was definitely able to say – ‘I didn’t know that before’ – and any day when we learn something new is a good day.

“THE BRIDGE MILL

A Mill is shown on a map dated 1641 indicating there has been a mill here for centuries. The present structure has undergone many alterations including a rebuilding after it was burnt in 1837. A waterwheel, (now removed) powered by the millrace, operated the mill machinery. The millrace was fed by water diverted from the River Awbeg just above the bridge. The mill ground corn using pairs of millstones which were replaced in 1887 by roller mills. The mill worked up to the 1990’s when the local community purchased and converted it for modern use.”

“THE BRIDGE

The old stone bridge spans a strategic crossing point of the River Awbeg. Incorporated into the present structure are the remains of a medieval bridge shown on a map of 1641. Remains of this bridge can be seen on the upriver side as 3 small semicircular arches with 3 wide poers. In the 18th century this bridge was widened to accommodate the increase in traffic. In the 19th century a wide segmental arch was inserted over the millrace. Bridging many centuries, it has served its community well.”
