If I am filling a watering can from the tap, at some stage it would be half-full. When pouring the contents of a watering can, at some stage it is half-empty.
On this logic, every pint that I have ever drunk has, at some time during my enjoyment, been half-empty – until last night at Quinlans in Princes’ Street.
This was definitely a first. I have never seen before such markings on a pint glass – or any glass. I have considered why they are on the glass and cannot find anything that would really warrant the bother.
- Maybe to assist those counting their alcohol units per hour.
- Maybe they do not have half-pint glasses and this allows the restaurant to dispense a half-pint.
- Maybe for marketing purposes with people like me falling into the trap of talking about Killarney Brewing.
