Another headstone spotted at Old Church cemetery in Cobh yesterday.
The headstone to Alfred Scott Witherbee Jr who died aged 3 when the Lusitania was torpedoed and sunk includes the words ‘Killed By Germany’ which has prompted me to gather together the headstones that include reference to Killed and Murdered. There is a Virtual Cemetery on FindAGrave that includes some that have already been subject of earlier blogs – John (Jackie) Flanagan; Timothy Connell; Guilio Scherini; and, Breda O’Connell
My limited understanding as to the Lusitania; it having been warned; it passing through a declared warzone; and, the possibility of it having been carrying munitions is such that I would not have considered the death as a murder.

Two families seemingly went to court over the recovered body – both believing it to be their son. The Witherbee family were successful.
