A Nod to Percy Metcalfe

Beware of The Bull

Picture
Rock Street, Tralee, Co. Kerry
This piece of street furniture is beautiful. It brought a big smile to my face: I had to stop and photograph.

I suspect that many walk up and down Rock Street and do not see it – it may be in their vision but the detail may not register on the conscience.

In late 2024, I saw online a plaque in Yorkshire to Robert Percy Pulliene. It was made by Percy Metcalfe, a sculptor and medallist whose work was known to all Irish people for decades even if the absolutely vast majority may never have heard of Percy Metcalfe - like me, upto then.

I have been inactive on Twitter for many months. I am in the process of transferring to a Word document all of my bookmarks, those posts that I saved for checking back on. Last month, I again saw the post with Percy Metcalfe’s work. A few weeks later, in Tralee, the bull was observed – sufficient stars aligning to justify a blog post.

The leg positions of the Tralee Bull differ from the shilling-bull, so it is not a replica. To my eyes, it is a definite nod – not the first and hopefully not the last.

Stop The Clock

Our Lady Conceived Without Sin Church Graveyard, Mitchelstown, Co. Cork
There is a first time for learning everything. Each piece of knowledge was once newly learnt – some bringing more satisfaction and smiles that others.

It was in Jean de Florette that I first learnt of the tradition of stopping the clock when someone dies. As with many items learnt, once one knows of it, one encounters it more often. Every time I see or read of a clock being stopped, the image from Jean de Florette appears on my brain. Sometimes, Four Weddings & A Funeral follows.

In Mitchelstown last week, I encountered another first – a stopped clock on display on a headstone. I like.
“According to William Egan of Clonfanlough, County Offaly, immediately the person dies, the window of the room was opened top and bottom because ‘the angel used to come in overhead an’ the devil had to go out under’. He had been given this explanation by a neighbour, who also believed that at the time of death space must be left beside the bed for the angel guardian. These rituals of stopping clocks, covering mirrors and opening windows have been recorded throughout the midlands and they were observed until recently.”

John Moynihan, A Young Hero

Sometimes a headstone will send me down a rabbit hole of trying to find out more. Yesterday, at Caherlag Cemetery, I learnt of John Moynihan who, like Grace Dowling, died trying to save the life of another.

“Sergeant Edward Gannon deposed that about 11:30 on Thursday he was at the barrack door when Mrs. Vicara came up to hi and said there was a boy drowned. He immediately proceeded to the spot but saw nothing. He procured a boat, and superintended the dragging of the river, and found the bodies about two hours afterwards. They were then apparently dead. They were clung in each other’s arms. O’Shea being on top.

……

The Coroner, in summing up, said that it was a very melancholy case, indeed. It was evident from the information received that it was purely accidental, and the action of John Moynihan was exceptionally plucky and gallant. He certainly deserved a better afte. He then suggested that the jury would find a verdict that John Moynihan died from suffocation from accidental drowning whist gallantly trying to save the life of John O’Shea, and that John O’Shea died from accidental drowning.

A verdict accordingly was returned.”

A Moving Fada

How would you spell the name?
  • Sean
  • Séan
  • Seán
  • Shawn

Seán and Sean would be my starting assumptions.
Picture

I would pronounce Séan as SHANE. The other three, I would pronounce as Shawn.

I have seen all four spelling variations but today at Caherlag Cemetery was, I think, the first time that I have seen one person’s name spelled as both Séan and Seán.

The Military Pension files of Sean Murray show that he signed his name mainly as Seán and sometimes Sean. I did not see any Séan.
